Played in 18 regular season games and the Scotiabank West Semifinal…Finished the season leading the CFL in kickoff return yards (1,461), kickoff returns (63) and kickoff return average (23.2)…He also recorded the one and only kickoff return touchdown in the season with a 90 yard score vs Edmonton on September 8…His best single game return average was on September 23 vs Toronto…Averaging 40.7 per return (three returns for 122 yards)…Ruffin also 42 defensive tackles, five special team tackles, four pass knockdowns, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble, one interception (nine yards), one tackle for a loss…At the conclusion of the season Ruffin was named the Stampeders Most Outstanding Rookie of the Year.

J.R. is the #1 cornerback in the left CB depth chart, and has played well this spring. In the Spring Game J.R. had 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 pass breakup. J.R. will factor heavily into the cornerback rotation this fall.
Ruffin played in five games and started three. In that abbreviated appearance, he had 32 tackles (24 solo, eight assists), two pass breakups, one tackle-for-loss, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one blocked kick…He had a career-best 11 tackles at New Mexico State, the game during which he also had a career high nine solo stops.
He was an all-conference and all-state honoree at receiver and defensive back. He also ran track and was similarly recognized on the all-state and all-conference teams. In addition, he was a captain for both squads and was a scholar-athlete. In 2002, Collegefootballnews.com rated J.R. the top recruit in that year's class at Idaho. The young man has the physical gifts to be a solid DB at the D1 level: he's swift (100 and 200 meter track athlete who also reportedly runs a sub-4.30 seconds in the 40 yard dash), has good size and is a good cover corner.
